BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Nebiyu Lera Alaro obtained his PhD in public health from Central University of Nicaragua (in academic partnership with Texila American University). He is an International Public Health Specialist with more than twelve years of experience in humanitarian affairs associated with Maternal, New born and Child Health (MNCH), Research, Project Monitoring and Evaluation, Health System Strengthening, Quality Assurance and Capacity Building, with teaching/mentoring experience for public health students, staff and volunteers. He worked for Doctors with Africa – CUAMM Lake state, South Sudan as Technical Project Manager where he was responsible for providing leadership and overall guidance in project planning, implementation and monitoring/evaluation including direct technical support; (training and mentoring) to staff, towards achieving effective participatory and sustainable implementation, of primary and secondary health care system at all levels. He presently works at Health Support Organaization – THESO as Country Program Director, South Sudan.

Dr. Nebiyu has been involved in many public health field works and operational researches. He has research publications on various medical and public health issues to his credit. He is known for commitment to excellence that is evident through all aspects of his work. He is innovative, demonstrates respect for others, passionate about his work and has a strong sense of accountability. His contributions have helped dramatically improve the reproductive health, child health, Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI), surveillance, prevention and treatment of Communicable and Non- Communicable Diseases (NCDs), health promotion, nutrition therapy program (as funded by USAID, HPF, WFP, UNICEF, Japan Plat fourm and Italian Cooperation funds) including evaluation system in South Sudan. The improvements reported in the external quality scores under his leadership have been simply dramatic. Importantly, Nebiyu is dedicated to mentoring students, interns, staff and volunteers.

RESEARCH INTEREST

Dr. Nebiyu research interests include International public health, Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH), Reproductive Health, Impact evaluation of humanitarian care/interventions, Child nutrition, Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPDs), Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) and Disaster management.

Duties and Responsibilities Performed:

  • Responsible for effective Management of all THESO programmes including planning, Implementation,monitoring, évaluation, and reporting maintaining Work plans and budget that identifies key objectives, responsible staff, deliverables and potential obstacles.

  • Provide leadership and management for programmes, security, admin, HR and recruitment departments, monitoring and review performances, assess development needs, provide coaching and Mentoring to build a highly motivated personnel and team that are able to implement responsive and responsible programs at the same time pursuing new sources of donor funding and maintain adequate donor funding levels to sustain identified programme and support activities.

Duties and Responsibilities Performed:

  • Monitor the quality of services in the health program including adherence to MoH protocols and implement remedial steps to improve quality and adherence;
  • outreach and community based activities
  • Review and evaluate the quality of health information data;
  • Ensure that the PHCC and PHCU is providing required reports for the CUAMM and the MOH health information system;
  • Recruit staff as required to implement the health program, in coordination with HR department;
  • Prepare and manage in-service training plan for health staff;
  • Assemble and manage essential reference materials (books, manuals, videos) and make it accessible;
  • Manage quarter and annual performance review of health program staff;
  • Monitor the status of equipment and supplies and ensure timely procurement and distribution
  • Monitor the storage, handling and recording of medical supplies and implement steps to avoid losses;
  • Regularly review and update the process for medical referrals from health facilities to referral Hospital;
  • Participate with the MoH in the development and revision of health guidelines and protocols.

Duties and Responsibilities Performed:

  • outreach and community based activities
  • Support the County management;
  • Strengthen the referral system from community to PHCC,PHCU, county hospital, state hospital;
  • Organize and provide technical and managerial trainings to Nurses and midwifes;
  • Ensure essential and emergency drugs supply without stock out, infection prevention, hygiene and sterilization, proper waste management;
  • Ensure if the standard Nursing services are provided properly according to the SOP and protocols;
  • Develop systems for the management and supervision of nursing and midwifery services at the PHCC and PHCU;
  • Work in collaboration with the CO, Nursing Overseer and the in charge nurses to promote safe standards;
  • Contribute to good stock control and efficient use
  • Provide technical supervision and support to health/nursing personnel;
  • Assist the Coordinator with prospective programs through field research and surveys;
  • In coordination with Monitoring and Evaluation Manager, analyze routine data; and prepare reports;
